Steps
The steps of a process, numbered and in order: what happens at the office, how to apply, what happens after you send a form.
When to use
When the order matters and each step is something that happens or something the person does. On a service page, and under "What happens next" on a confirmation page.
When not to use
For a list of documents to bring, or anything else where order does not matter: that is a bulleted list. For the pages of a form, ask one question per page and do not show a progress bar.

</ol>Without titles
When each step is one sentence, leave the title out.
- An officer checks your documents.
- Your fingerprints and photograph are taken.
- You check the printed details and sign.
- Your card is printed and handed to you.

</ol>How it works
- An ordered list. The numbers are counted by the browser, so adding a step never means renumbering.
- The title is a heading at the level the page needs, and is optional.
- The column is held to the reading width. A step can hold paragraphs, a link or an inset.
- Start each step with who acts: "An officer checks", "You pay". Keep to seven steps or fewer.
Accessibility
- It is a real
ol, so a screen reader says "list, 4 items" and the position of each. - The number comes from the list's own counter, so it is never read twice.
- The line and the ring are decoration. The order is in the markup.
